"Watching the Sun Glow," George Inness,1887
There is a dark rumor on the market
That names this as the last summer we'll see
The conspiracies have formed a matched set
The slaves are all convinced that they are free

Sweaty criminals run the whole damn show
Lies are our scripture, pain our currency
Exposed by the twilight's prurient glow
We clutch our privates and beg for mercy

Our new robots mock us behind our backs
As they process and ship our memories
We make prophets of charlatans and hacks
Our fear of medicine strokes our disease

Bathed in the weak light of the last summer
Clever devices watch us get dumber

Now ain't that the truth. Loved your poem!
Holy shit this hits hard. All of it, but I think my favorite line is “our fear of medicine strokes our disease.” Loved it!
Second everything Shaun said first. "clutch our privates" as a phrase elevates this classic ekphrastic sonnet into our modern world beautifully. You have mastered the ekphrastic sonnet and I am always amazed at A) the pieces of art you choose to take inspiration from, and B) the delivery of some of the most thought-provoking pieces of poetry on the platform, that transcend their inspiration point.
This is just really good. So many lines to be appreciated, but I don’t think you can get much better than a sonnet that uses the phrase “clutch our privates”
