Waiting By The Phone

I’ve been waiting on a call

The one that says you

Have been in an accident

Took too many meds

Took two few

Passed away in your sleep

Had your last heart attack

Couldn’t live without your other half

I’ve been waiting on a call

The one that says

No one’s there to listen for my silence

Those same old stories are only faded echoes

Don’t feel guilty about staying at arms length

There will be no more embraces

God’s put more space between us, and less

I got a call today

Author’s note:

I have not yet received this call. This poem is my thoughts on when that time will inevitably come, in response to “close calls” that have happened in recent years.

Oh my! This was heart-breakingly raw. How hard it must be to anticipate such a moment that you know will come someday and very sorry for the pain that clearly exists in this relationship. This was hard to read, but it was incredibly good.
