Vanishing Point
and if you were to draw the long straight road
and you were to imagine it stretching in front of you
and if you drew it in the dust before your feet:
this is how it would look.
the lines denoting the road would come together
gradually, closing in to the cusp of earth
they would meet at the point where the road becomes the sky:
that’s the vanishing point.
now in the dust at your feet begin to draw
the road step by step and don’t forget
to keep your lines in rhythm with your steps:
the goal is the sky.
each step you take along the road becomes
a milestone where other lines might intersect
and draw your eyes away to other points:
these are not your destination.
don’t bring your lines to the point too soon
lest you miss some vital step of the journey
a glimpse, a kiss, a stumble might make all the difference:
but the horizon is constant.
the masters of renaissance it is said
laboured over their work until they found
the truth contained within the illusion of space
and followed the lines towards their immortality:
this knowledge is yours.
take heart, therefore, that the road will end at a point
of your own design and allow you the flight that comes
with the convergence of lines at the end of the road:
this is the vanishing point.
