Unspoken

a Villanelle of Regret

I watched the night swallow the day

Forced to let the outcome be

And thought of things I didn't say

My whispered ruminating led me astray

I let insecurities consume me

And thought of things I didn't say

I felt undeserving of your warming rays

So inward I began to flee

I watched the night swallow the day

Fears and doubts came out to play

I buried myself under diffident debris

And thought of things I didn't say

Can no longer hold the truth at bay

Scales torn off and made to see

I watched the night swallow the day

My callow heart pushed you away

I finally grew up after you left me

I watched the night swallow the day

And thought of things I didn't say

Congratulations! Brimming with regret, but I like the progression: “My callow heart pushed you away I finally grew up after you left me”✅

This was relatable. Well written. I especially felt the "I buried myself under diffident debris And thought of things I didn't say" Excellent poem.

Unspoken words can feel so heavy

I felt this. The way it circles back on itself really works, that looping regret you can’t quite outrun. Well I can't anyways. Good stuff.
