Rat-Faced Boy

a poem

By Aaron MorrisonPublished 2 months ago 1 min read

Carnival’s here

You want to go?

I simply look up

And shake my head no

They have carousels

A flume and The Whip

A scrambler

A swinger

Other names I forget

But there’s several others

Like one that spins round

And one that shoots up

Then drops you back down

And there’s the Ferris wheel

That’s six stories high

All carelessly built

I don’t want to die

How ‘bout the games?

Ring toss

Balloon darts

You might win a prize

All of it rigged

Just a waste of my time

This one’s got a freakshow

Mermaids and dog-boys

A real set of twins with too many limbs

Someone real short

Another real tall

All manner of oddities

Lined up in a hall

Why would I pay

For what I can see

Every morning and evening

In the mirror for free
