To me, this has always been an incredible picture, taken fifteen years before I became an adopted Novocastrian. My eldest daughter Juliet lives in Wallsend and my youngest daughter Kirsty used to live there with her husband Mark.

It is also for Poppy's Prompt that you can read about and enter here:

At The End Of Our Street, A Veil Of Steel Grey

That Was Once Just A Skeleton Girder Shell

The Tyne Pride's Might Brought Night To Our Working Day

Our Horizon To Follow On The Morn Bell

At The End Of Our Street, A Veil Of Steel Grey

Our Street Bathed In Light When Tyne Pride Sailed Away

To Be Laden With Oil Drawn From Sunken Wells

It Was Built By The Shipwrights On The Slipway

But Now Long Time Gone Are Those Lost Halcyon Days

Maple Wooded Captain's Quarters Served So Well

At The End Of Our Street, A Veil Of Steel Grey

That Wondrous Sight Has Forever Gone Away

Tyne Pride Not Forgotten, But Remembered Well

It Was Built By The Shipwrights On The Slipway

The Tyne Pride's Last Journey Was To The Scapyard

A Tanker No Longer, It's Just Scrap Metal

Nice meditation on a fantastic photo. Are you familiar with Chris Killip's work? Some great images of Wallsend in the 70s. He had a retrospective at the Baltic about 18 months ago.

  • This was a beautiful take on the prompts. Loved your poem!
