It wore the voice of something sweet,

like nectar pooled at poisoned feet.

A brush, a touchโ€”divine, divineโ€”

but laced with rust beneath the shine.

*

It bloomed in gardens carved from grace,

then spoiled the roots it once embraced.

The vine that said โ€œI cling for youโ€

was choking all it once clung to.

*

It hummed a song of something sweet,

so saccharine it gave defeat.

It said โ€œyouโ€™re mineโ€ in velvet tonesโ€”

then turned my spine to brittle bones.

*

Sweet, I said, when truth grew thin.

Sweet, I begged, and let it in.

Sweet, I whispered with an ache,

and to every dream it came to break.

*

Sweet sweet, the echo in my head,

sweet sweet, the poison that it fed.

Sweet sweet, I wore it like a crownโ€”

while everything I was burned down.

*

Sweet sweet sweet, it filled my breath,

a lullaby that smelled like death.

Sweet sweet sweet, the only soundโ€”

until I couldn't tell the ground

from sky, or flame from light, or me

from all this soft-slick tragedy.

A powerful portrayal of the allure and danger of sweetnessโ€”it's haunting how beautifully the poison seeps in.

This is amazing, you have a real talent

  • Beautifully penned. The sweet refrain really build up the underlying menace.

Good start and amazing poem, and well written.

  • The repetition of the word "sweet" made this seem like song lyrics. Loved it so much!
