Choke me with your deepest darkest detestation

Burn me with sulphuric or nitric acid

intent to disfigure, maime and torture

Aim for my face, skins burning tissue

Expose and dissolve my bones

Render me blind to my place in this world

Leave me to question if this was my fault

I’m telling you to take these scars away

My family suffered because of me

Listen to my depression, far from endogenous

My mothers heart ive stricken

Everybody looks at me with pity

They say what a shame

She has lost her beauty

They say I am cursed

My heart is darkened

Van dongen was hardened,

By his image in the mirror

Fed through a tube his light got dimmer

4 months in a coma,

But when he arise,

He pointed with his tongue and tears in his eyes

Daddy I can’t speak

There’s hope when he dies

His girlfriend was evil

Euthanasia is peaceful

To stop the upheaval, he cuts all ties.

🙏 Thank you for reading

A/N I’ve never been a victim of an acid attack, but when I looked at the news I learnt that a 14 year old girl had suffered that fate. Although not much was said about why it happened, I wanted to bring our minds to her and the poem above is how she might be feeling. Based on my research on how others who have gone through this, said they were feeling.

I dug some more and came across Van Dongen, his story was very tragic and I wish he was still here with us, but I included him and his story in this poem to remind us that we suffer together, not apart.

Oh how terrible people can be to one another. I lived in NY and knew of a few cases. Geez, how black have people's hears become. Great poem to honor such horrors.

In Shakespeare's play King Lear, when the king learns that his daughter, Cordelia, was executed, he screams "Howl, howl, howl." When I read of these horrible attacks on women it makes me want to howl in anguish too. This is beautifully and sensitively written. Your empathy does you credit, Caitlin.

Such a powerful poem. Acid attacks are one of those things that are so horrible it's hard to believe they are true even though you know they are.

We all have scars and wounds in our hearts. However, we must look up and not do harm, because that comes back to us. Very powerful, thank you, you always move me

Anyone that would throw acid at anybody is one sick, nasty person. Your poem is one way to get a message across to someone.
