Thumbsnatcher
Mother always said
‘Wear Gloves To Bed’
Everyone thought she was off her head
‘Gloves will make our hands hot!
Like we’ve grabbed a boiling pot
Mum really is just too mad
I won’t wear gloves, sorry! Too bad!’
But Mothers warning they should heed
For there was a monster with a brutal need
If only they knew they’d be filled with dread
Listen to what their mother said:
‘Hidden under a child’s bed
Is an awful monstrous creature
In your nightmares it will feature
Evil eyes so red and round
Its breath a raspy, gaspy sound
From underneath your bed it crawls
Then it stands oh so Tall
Sniffing at the silent air
It will smell you over there
Your hands it will sniff and seek
Keep your eyes closed, don’t peek!
Its long tongue rolls from its jaw
A nastier thing you never saw
Red and green with a putrid dot
Its breath smells of fetid rot
Towards your bed here it comes
Its eyes fixed on your bare thumbs
As you sleep and dream so sweet
Your little thumbs it will eat!
CHOMP, CHOMP CRUNCH AND RIP
Out your mouth a scream will slip
But it will be too late
Your fingers down from ten to eight
Children my advice don’t fight
Please wear your gloves tonight’
The children laughed at such silliness
But Mother was in such distress
‘The Thumbsnatcher is coming for you!’
‘Thumbsnatcher?!’ they laughed ‘Oh Pooh Pooh!
Little did they understand
What was looking at their hand
Lying in wait till they slept
Across the floor Thumbsnatcher crept
Looking at those delicious thumbs
The monstrous beast smacked his gums
The Thumbsnatcher took a big bite
The children woke screaming in fright
All through the house screams could be heard
Mother just sighed, Children never learned.
