The Man On The Moon

Jimmy wanted to visit the man on the moon

‘How do I get there? I know! A balloon!’

All through the night Jimmy did stitch

He wanted this journey without a hitch

He made a basket from an old table

He had to be sure it would be stable

He packed his lunch and an extra one too

He might get hungry, you just never knew

Jimmy’s Mum said ‘Son don’t be late’

But Jimmy was off, he just couldn’t wait!

Off he set in his basket and balloon

He just couldn’t wait to visit the moon!

Up and up and up he rose

It was cold and tingled his nose

Soon he was up there in space

He couldn’t keep the smile from his face!

Jimmy ate lunch number one

He was having so much fun

Across the dark atmosphere

Jimmy saw a bright shiny sphere

‘A shooting star’ he yelled out loud

Jimmy felt immeasurably proud

He made a wish quick in his head

Shooting star wishes must never be said

Up and up just floating by

Jimmy was far from earths blue sky

Suddenly up there through the gloom

Jimmy could see the pale blue moon

In his tummy excitement grew

He just didn’t know what to do!

‘First I should say hello?

Or shake hands? I just don’t know’

Closer and closer came the moon

Jimmy would meet the man soon

Down he landed with a bump

Quickly he turned off his air pump

‘Hello’ he called out his voice an echo

But the moon was empty, not even a gecko

‘Hello? Mr moon I’m here to visit’

Being alone on the moon felt quite illicit

Jimmy looked around at the empty space

The moon was such a lonely place

‘Is anyone here I’ve come so far

On my way I saw a shooting star

I made a wish to happen so soon

I wished to meet the man on the moon’

Out of the dark Jimmy could see

A man, he was smiling so full of glee

‘Hello dear boy and welcome here

Please do not have any fear

It is so nice to have a guest

Come now my boy you must need a rest!

Let me show you the moon, my home

It is so nice to be less alone’

Jimmy ran towards the man

So happy he thought of this plan

Jimmy sat on a rock to rest at last

And the man told him of his past

‘When I was a very young man

I thought of an adventurous plan

I built a rocket all by my self

And I called it Rocky The Elf!

I came to the moon many years ago

In those days spaceships were very slow

It took me so long to land on this rock

But that is when I had a shock

I thought I would see Aliens and creatures galore

I expected so much more

But I saw to my great dismay

There was no one with whom I could play

Not a beast or alien or space creature

No snake or bear or blood leacher!

Just an empty moon so quiet so still

And just me with time to kill

I decided I would head back

Then I realised Fuel I Did Lack!

I was now stuck in this gloomy place

Lost forever in the vastness of space’

Jimmy felt sorry for this poor man

‘I’ll cheer him up, I’ll do it, I can!’

So they spent the day together

Laughing away like birds of a feather

The man told Jimmy all the star’s names

Jimmy taught him so many games

They shared Jimmy’s second lunch

Except for Jimmy this was brunch!

Soon it came to the end of the day

Jimmy knew he couldn’t stay

‘Mr. Moon I’m sorry I have to leave

But I’ll return, you must believe’

Jimmy started towards his balloon

Oh how he wished he had more room

The basket was only fit for one

It was late Jimmy had to be gone

Suddenly Jimmy was thrown to the ground

Too quick for him to make a sound

Jimmy looked up confused and hurt

Mr. Moon was very curt

‘Sorry little boy but the time has come

I need off this rock, it’s over I’m done!

I need to take your basket space

You’ve got to stay in this lonely place

I need out, I’ve been so alone

I’m sorry kid but throw me a bone!’

Jimmy got up and started to run

This visit had long stopped being fun

Jimmy was fast, nimble and quick

Being stuck here made him feel sick!

Jimmy almost got to the balloon

But he celebrated just too soon

Smiling as he reached his basket

His head felt like it blew a gasket

Dazed he lay flat on the floor

He couldn’t move everything felt sore

He watched as the man fired up his pump

On his head he felt a huge, big bump

‘Please don’t leave me!’ Jimmy cried

Being stuck here would feel like he died

The balloon drifted far away

‘No come back! Please, please stay!’

Jimmy fell into a dreamless sleep

Below on earth his family would weep

Their boy Jimmy had disappeared

Something mothers always feared

‘Jimmy’ they cried ‘please come home soon’

But Jimmy was now the Man On The Moon.
