Things I Outgrew
I outgrew sugary treats for breakfast
when I was 18 I thought that I outgrew my britches
But I still make Mamaw's waffles when I'm missing home.
I outgrew fairytales and poems that rhyme
I outgrew feeling the slowness of time
and I outgrew believe you're better off never alone.
I outgrew thinking twenty dollars was cheap
and outgrew not caring about dishes in the sink
and I outgrew pushing away help getting up when I fall.
I outgrew organized religion - don't know what it's for
and trusting the government - who takes more and more
cause I out grew the rose colored glasses that covered it all.

there’s something both haunting and liberating about acknowledging the things we leave behind. The imagery is powerful, almost like peeling away layers of an old self, making room for something new. The transition from childhood innocence to the weight of experience is beautifully woven in. Well done!
