The Wind From “Alaskae”

The fickle wind of fortune

Well, you read about it in the daily papers,

And you see it all the time on TV,

And you wonder if such things can really happen,

To unsuspecting people like you or me.

Last night, a man was shot in the suburbs,

And tomorrow night, a tragedy at sea,

When you feel that chill go up and down your spine,

It’s the wind of fortune blowing from Alaskae.

Do you ever wonder about the issues in this world?

Do you ever wonder whose misfortune it will be?

Do you think that people ask to be caught up in senseless wars?

Do politicians pretend that they can’t see?

Their archaic laws and judicial systems,

Do they really protect you and me?

Chills your bones and dulls your emotions,

Cold Alaskan wind, please don’t blow on me.

Don't you think we take our lives a bit for granted?

God knows we are only here for a short while,

And it is so easy for us to fall victim.

Of that cold wind blowing in from the sea.

Spare a thought for those of us less fortunate,

Try to be as happy as you can be,

Lie is too short to fight and quarrel,

And don’t forget the cold wind from Alaskae.

[Author's note: The wind from Alaskae is symbolic of the wind of the future that blows on us. In this case, in a negative way. Alaskae is simply metaphorically a cold, icy wind from Alaska, modified to rhyme.]

Till next time,

This is brilliant. The cold wind of the future sounds suitable right now.

When I read 'you and me' then the reveal of the 'shot'. I was shocked. It went from being personal to terrifying. Like that could really happen to me, if I am at the wrong place at the wrong time. Oh so that was what that chill was. The wind of fortune blowing from Alaskae. Such a nice sounding line. 👌🏾 Merging the Alaskan wind and the poor management on the government side. Really is such a perfect contrast and metaphor. Boy are times both cold and uncertain. Love your explanation at the end. It tied your poem together perfectly. Thank you for the moment you have given us to reflect on whether we are taking our lives for granted. This was a fantastic poem 🤗❤️

I like how you tied global issues back to personal reflection.

  • So true. Today it would be others, tomorrow it could be us. We never know what's gonna happen. Loved your poem@
