The Wildlife Communicator

A decision needs to be made

A gorgeous blonde hair, blue eyed boy was born one magical day

He was any parents’ dream come true, a little miracle in himself,

Adored and doted on from the day of his conception, much wanted

All who meet him succumb to his silent charms, including myself.

***

This newborn baby boy was angelic, not a worry to either parent

Fed beautifully without any fuss and slept right through the night,

Within months he becomes aware, little eyes curious to the world

As a babe in arms evolves into a hurricane toddler, as is his right.

***

He has never been a silent boy, with his baby gibberish non-stop

It was so cute, calming although we’d never understood a word,

But it was so delightful to hear a chuckle or a giggle fill the room

His parents where excited waiting for his first word to be heard.

***

But alas, that was never going to be, I am terribly sad to tell you

As this gorgeous, almost perfect little child had been born mute,

Although he could make baby sounds or gurgles but never speak

This tiny flaw does not make him dumb, he’s actually very astute.

***

His parents accepted his diagnosis, still loving and adoring him

As the time passed relatively quickly, he grew into his teen years,

He has chosen to be totally silent now for more than half of his life

Used as a defence mechanism to cover his shame and his fears.

***

Until one magical day, which dawned in brightly coloured clouds

It’s his rite of passage, his golden gift as he slips into his teens,

And it brightened up his day, his life, making it excitingly perfect

A special gift was bestowed on him the day he turned thirteen.

***

The day he was wandering alone through a rich dense rainforest

When he glimpsed a monkey flying through the trees, so free,

And as he laughed in glee, he clearly heard, “What are you doing

Hurry follow along, run, as there is something you need to see.”

***

“I must be dreaming or I am going insane,” he mutters aloud

Which caused the monkey to start cackling in sheer delight,

“I promise, Wildlife Communicator, you still have your sanity

To aid all animal kind is your birth right, it’s pointless to fight.”

***

It was that very day that he discovered his true purpose in life

As he could speak, his voice could be heard, to a select few,

Every single kind of animal, the wildlife and the domesticated

He needed to take up their cause, it’s what he was born to do.

***

Then he made a painful discovery, as the rainforest come alive

From every direction animals moved forth, like a church choir,

He listened to all the different voices, their natural life songs

As they discuss their future, their master plan they conspire.

***

He becomes confused, overwhelmed, noisy sound overload

Then he pushes out his arms and suddenly shouts, “stop,”

Whereby the forest falls silent, the animals frozen in speech

“Why this master plan, surely this is all a little too over the top?”

***

You see he’s discovered their plan to control the human race

And he is a special ‘Wildlife Communicator’ destined to assist,

They’ve waited patiently for him to grow into this very role

And now he needs to decide carefully, will he agree or resist?

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
