The tragic story of the last Dino Party.

They partied into the Apocalypse

By Novel AllenPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

We had been planning the party for weeks

Our happiness knew no bounds

Dinos from near and far were chuffed and all agog

Their excitement meters running on pure adrenaline

They primped and primed, prettied and preened

We hunted, loved, fought and raged in the innate

nature of the ways of our species

As the yet unknown doomed day slowly approached.

Saturday finally arrived and every dinosaur

Got spiffed and gorgeously dressed to kill

Little did we know that this was our last day

That from the sky, an asteroid the size of a mountain

Had set its sights on the Yucatan Peninsula

Packing an explosive force

Equivalent to 100 trillion tons of TNT.

That in that cataclysmic instant

The 165-million-year reign of the dinosaurs

Would them become pages for the history books

With your eyes closed, imagine a collision so immense,

it released apocalyptic amounts of energy to become

the equivalent of billions of nuclear bombs.

The Ejecta was indescribable

The asteroid's impact threw massive amounts of debris into the atmosphere,

including iridium, a metal more common in asteroids than in the Earth’s crust.

This debris spread globally, forming a layer of sediment that is still identifiable today.

Imagine the force of the impact generating massive tsunamis that washed over continents, and firestorms that may have engulfed large areas of the planet.

The Climate then became a monster of Change

As Debris cloud blocked sunlight, temperature dropped drastically and alarmingly (impacting winter),

which then killed off plant life and disrupted the food chain.

Not long after, greenhouse gases from the impact caused temperatures to rise above pre-impact levels.

The Long-Term Effects were devastating

The combination of these immediate and long-term effects created an inhospitable environment for dinosaurs and many other species, leading to their mass extinction.

As a Warning from the literal/metaphorical ghost-writing dinosaur:

This event underscores the fragility of Earth’s ecosystems in the face of such powerful natural disasters.

I write this with my last breath for those who will come after

Now: Entrusting it to the winds of change,

AI juxtaposing human and dinosaur extinction

We die

As new life awaits a beginning!!!

Very vivid story. Felt like I was invited to that party. Unfortunately, there was no after party. 😔

  • Please ask that asteroid to swing by for a visit again. I'd be so grateful. Loved your poem!

An account of the fall of the great beasts that is both tragic and comic! Nice work!
