the sun, the moon, us, and the stars
written unknowingly about my first love at seventeen
"Sweet words, the taste of honey, splattered on the pages every afternoon.
Eyes to the sky, ruffling through the trees in search of you.
The breeze against my skin, so cool and fresh, like your spicy autumn aroma.
Every morning, I look at the first rays and my mind wanders to you.
The silver moon glistening in the hushed night, admires the evening sun radiating its joyous warmth.
The moon ponders... Why are we so different?
'I shine the calm waters, I swiftly flow through the trees, greeting the night owls. You, greet the meadows, bloom the new, you bring beauty to my once dark world.'
It reminds me of our once infatuating romance. My dark, shy, quiet persona, contrasts with your bright, happy, lively outlook. He showed me my reflection in the oceans, and I showed him the beauty of the night. And now, as I stare at the evening glow of purple and orange, I thought..
Maybe we aren't so different. Our eyes saw the same sky."
" "Hey Riley?" He said next to me.
"Yeah?" I whispered into the night.
"Have you ever thought we deserve to see the stars?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, the stars. They're so beautiful, twinkling in the night. Do we deserve to watch them?"
"Well, we are specks of light and stardust. We are human beings, each one of us has a story, a journey, a life. So do those stars. Only years from now, we won't be the ones gazing. Do you think we deserve to?"
"We're worth the stars," I mumbled quietly.
"Our stories deserve to be told to the world.." I continued getting louder.
"A story of two people who fell in love by watching the stars?" She chuckled and looked at me.
"Two fighters who realized their worth amongst a gazing starry night."
"Do you think we are truly worth the stars, Riley?" I breathed into the goose-bump-filled air.
"We are worth the stars, Skylar." I sighed as their hand was placed upon mine, and the sky turned gold and peach.
“Perhaps we are worth it.”
