The Stream of Lost Hues

Perhaps a tattoo, perhaps not

So broken, even a fake smile fails.

So shattered, the pieces are dust.

I can't be what everyone thinks of me.

I'm not an angel, I'm not a demon

Then what am I?

A colorless creature

Or the tiny pebble thrown into the stream

Where my ripples are stifled.

Lost and falling into a shadow where only distorted light can reach.

The flow doesn't always take you in the right direction

So where am I going?

Don't always trust where someone directs you to

Because manipulation is free.

Don't ask me to smile anymore

Because it's just not true.

I am worth as much as the ink I use

But I can only write on the darkness.

Lost in the depths a future I cannot see

There are lights, but none for me.

The spectrum shines on us all

But we don't get to choose which light is ours

In the stream of lost hues.

Ohh man I love that final line. Chef’s kiss

  • Excellent poem! I especially like: “ Don't always trust where someone directs you to Because manipulation is free.” so true! You have an amazing turn of phrase!🤩

Such a deep well written piece Euan but a little sad. I agree with Caitlin - Masterpiece. You have such talent Euan. Well Done!!

I can’t say masterpiece loud enough. Someone like you actually exist?! I love the jump from ‘shattered’ to ‘dust’. It’s both alarming and surprising. The link ~ seamless and opposite but it works. The imagery of the colourless creature. I like that. It makes me feel just how misunderstood a colourless creature can be. ‘Manipulation is free’ I’ve never heard this before, but how deeply profound is that. Quite a scary thing too. Can be thrown right as us, just like that. ‘I’m worth as much as the ink I use’ wow 🤩 it just gets better and better. Speechless is what I am right now, honestly this poem is all I want in a poem. In reading one. Shocking and just the right amount of emotion in every few line. ‘There are lights but none for me’ honestly, you’re very talented. Thank you for sharing this with us, outstanding work Euan👌🏽

"I am worth as much as the ink I use" This sentence is definitely not true ❤️but I totally understand the feeling. You captured it so beautifully, while pointing out important things in life - like fake smiling, and who am I if I can't describe it? Sending lots of hugs!

This poem has a haunting beauty. It's deeply emotional and raw which goes well with the theme. Comparing yourself to the pebble in a stream shows the degree of depth. Hope all people experiencing these feelings soon get bombarded with positive vibes if life. You have a talent my friend - keep it up. Will be back for more

Ooh, this hits deep and hauntingly beautiful! I think so many of us have felt like that pebble—small, unnoticed, drifting where we didn’t ask to go. But even in that stream, even when we feel forgotten, our presence creates ripples. You’re not alone in feeling lost, and maybe that’s what keeps us connected—how humanly it is to search for color in the gray.✨

Well-wrought! There's a lot of quotable stuff here! Those last italicized lines resonate deeply, but here also is an excellent point: "Don't always trust where someone directs you to Because manipulation is free." We must beware those who feed us a trail of bread crumbs rather than sit willingly at the table to openly share a meal mutually made, for were it about sharing, there would be no need for them to lead us on!

Wow, I agree with Marilyn - This poem gives you much to think about. Lost in the depths of a future you cannot see. It definitely is a read that sticks with you. Good luck in the challenge. Nicely Done!!!

"Don't always trust where someone directs you to because manipulation is free"- This part really called out to me. Euan, this is a highly reflective piece, leaving the reader much to think about. Wishing you well in the challenge. This is one of those reads that sticks with you!

Ooh, that was heavy. I know what it feels like to be stuck in a spectrum's blind spot. But I believe there is a light for each and every one of us.

Gosh Euan - this is so sad. I think perhaps we all go through times when we feel like are never enough and will never move into the light. Excellent.

ohoho it's the writing in the dark that's hits the deepest. I swear, we writers must be hungry for the 'distorted light' that can only reach us in the depths, it makes us..well, us. Loved this!

Resounding, and it rings heartwrenchingly true.
