The stream

Floods

The stream in the backyard
Overflowed its banks yesterday.
Displacing the solitary mud crabs.
Who burrowed into its cool soft banks?
They scrambled to find a place of refuge.
As the waters swelled inching,
Creeping into their homes.

The crickets leapt crisscrossing.
Seeking refuge around the yard,
From the impeding deluge.
Centipedes barrage unto vertical surfaces.
Procuring higher ground.
This was preceded by the cockroaches
Scared for their lives.

I have always been amazed by nature!
Studying her signs and cues.
Tells stories unknown to most
A fleet of scattering roaches
Has always led to the revealing
Of giant centipedes on the prowl
Quite the formidable huntress.

When hermit crabs mount trees in troves
A hurricane is imminent!
Then there is the winged ants!
Scattering! They leave their hills.
Swarming where dry ground is found.
As if they have some secret Wi-Fi
Making wireless messages to announce the find.

They transport pearly eggs between their feet
Preserving the hive, abandoning the home.

I once saw a mongoose. Playfully stalking a white bellied dove.
He’d prance onto branches of low shrubs
Not unlike a kitten!
Then summersault off in an effort
A very acrobatic one I may add.
To procure his meal.

Must be a delicacy
Good hunting Mr. Mongoose.
