The Rule of Three
An Ineloquent Ode to My Amazing Husband
The rule of three is a media principle that states things are more interesting when they come in groups of three. In my life, though, it's usually the number of times I have to say something before I can get the right word to come out.
When I think of all the things I love about my husband, my tongue ties itself in knots, and I can never quite get the words to work the way I want them to. And yet, there is immense comfort in the fact that I don't have to be eloquent when I speak to him—he understands what I mean, even if it's not what I say.
We have our own dialect, as many partners do, and I couldn't possibly express the sense of ease and security that comes with that. Having someone with whom to share your life that speaks your language, even if that language is nonsense and you have to repeat yourself three times, is the greatest comfort I have known in my life.

The Rule of Three
Thrice I've tried to write this poem
And twice I've failed to capture
All the peace you breed inside me
That I cannot manufacture
🖤
Over many years and many poems
I've told you of the ways
That you bring the light to darkness
And you clear the foggy haze
🖤
But I can't help thinking nothing
That I've said or done so far
Has been quite enough to tell you
How spectacular you are
So instead of overthinking
What I need to say to you
And obsessing over which word's right
Instead of which one's true
🖤
I want to say just what I'm thinking
In this swiss cheese brain of mine
And say how much I appreciate
Your heart, your soul, your time
🖤
Your patience and your chivalry
Your love and your support
Your way of making home feel like
A five-star beach resort
Your glowing smile, your gentle hands
The way we say goodbye
All the little things that no one knows
They're just for you and I
🖤
The way my tension melts as soon
As I lay eyes on you
Your touch, your kiss, and all the other
Tender things you do
🖤
Each one a brick, into a wall
A fortress for my heart
Where you alone can hold the fort
When life just falls apart
🖤🖤🖤
