Immortal Comfort

A Poem about a Legacy

There is comfort in the notion that my death is not the end

And that those who’ve come to love me will be seeing me again

Though the afterlife is tempting with a golden river flowing

It’s not for me, and so I find my comfort in the knowing

***

That the bits of me unbroken will be scattered far and wide

To the ones who need them most, that they might make them whole inside

A heartbeat or a breath, perhaps, or vision clear and true

So my family can rest assured I’m living on anew

***

Then a tree, redwood or sycamore, or something very strong

Will be planted with my ashes when its time to move along

So my son and my dear husband can then rest within my shade

As they feel my essence hover in the place where I was laid

***

And the words I’ve written here and there, the art that I have made

Will be snapshots of the memories that otherwise might fade

With luck, my boy might hear my voice when reading from the page

And my husband see my smile and know that true love doesn’t age

***

And finally, a stone compressed and hardened to a shine

That is made from what remains of me, and down my family line

The stone shall pass. And with each generation, I can be

A constant source of comfort to the ones who cared for me

***

When my time is up, I know that those who love me will be sad

But I will always live in comfort knowing it won’t be so bad

When they can come to see my tree or touch their fingers to a stone

Or read my words and reassure themselves they’re not alone

***

My spirit will live on in all the things I leave behind

And in the memories that I am building in their minds

Don’t weep for me; I am not gone. There is no veil or portal

So as long as you remember me, I have become immortal

*****

I know that death is not the most comforting thought for most of us, but I really do find comfort in knowing that my family and friends will have tangible reminders of how much I loved them when I am gone. Although inevitable, you made death something that transcends beyond our mortal selves. Your memory will live on. Well done.

  • Omg! I love how you made death seem so comforting. This is like a Love Letter to your family and friends on how to accept your death and you find comfort in that. This is so beautiful!
