You kept me grounded, rooted in reality
So that my branches could grow skyward
Your sacrifices and encouragement nourished me
As I extended beyond our plot of land
You kept me from falling
As I dared to reach further and further
Now I reach for the stars
As the roots you made for me keep me
Planted to the Earth
Even though you’re not here to tend them
You gave me the tools to keep them
And to create roots of my own
So I can continue to grow by myself
And become the grand oak that you knew
I could always become

At first I thought this was of a relationship that was domineering and controlling then the last line read like a child ready to go out on their own. It is one of those poems you can read a dozen times and see a new story every time
