That day at the beach, sand in my toes.

With the dolphins laughing at us from the waves,

As if they knew something we didn’t.

*

The perfect day.

I allowed it to stay perfect, and you were happy to let me-

I knew about Her. I wasn’t ready, but I knew.

*

The silences of our life were starting to toll like bells.

What you weren’t saying-

What I wasn’t saying.

*

It rang around us and I-

I pretended not to hear. And you-

You thought I didn’t hear- or couldn’t.

*

That day though, was a bubble floating in a storm.

A ray of sunlight in the midnight tomes of our marriage.

*

The sandwich shop on the beach, the blanket, our picnic.

The laughter, the words.

We talked-

*

About nothing and about everything

Like we used to.

When there was nothing between us and our happiness.

*

When you still thought I was fertile

And I still thought you loved me.

*

That day was a bubble out of time.

A beautiful snapshot of what once was-

An eye in the storm that clashed around us.

*

I hold that day in a room in my heart.

And when I think of you I take it out and smile-

For what could have been.
