Who is the real me?
Sometimes, I am as sweet as can be,
With a smile at the ready.
I'll share an anecdote and a few laughs with co-workers.
I'm willing to let someone cut into traffic.
I may compliment a stranger.
"I love those earrings."
"What a cool shirt."
I have joy to deploy.
I have pep in my step.
The world is at my feet.
And sunny days hide the gray within me.
*
At another time, I'm as dark as can be,
With a scowl at the ready.
I avoid co-workers so I won't say something I'll regret.
I swear at practically everyone on the road.
I ignore most people - especially strangers.
In my mind, I think,
"Just leave me alone with those gawdy earrings."
"What were you thinking with that shirt?"
I am down, with a frown.
I have blue as my view.
It feels like the world is going to hell.
Such grayness hides the sunny me,
*
The only guarantee of change is time.
Another day, another mood.
So, I ask again,
Who is the real me?

I can relate to this so much! I'm going through similar scenarios often. I love the rhymes and the rhythm to your poem, it took the edge of the pain the lines could evoke.
I totally get your poem. We are indeed a mass of contradictions with no explanations 👏
I see the tug of war in this poem. Excellent entry to the Challenge
This really resonates. The way you show both the light and dark sides of yourself feels so honest and human.
