Hope River 2019

it’s starting to get harder

to hold up hope,

it is heavier, faster

cascading through riverbeds

into water that will flow right through

to your bones, freezing

hope is so small now,

a least where it lives

it’s grown smaller

as the world grows so large

this new hope is paralyzing

unexpected and rogue

it is heavy, dangerous, lonely,

but we adapt, we are strangely resilient beings

each day is a new exercise

we are building up new muscles

that allow us to start holding it up again

our arms grow weak without others

so we are demanding hope this time

instead of waiting

this impossible to reach miracle

we want to share it

hope is love shared in communities

hope is slippery and impatient

love is hope shared with others

we may need to hold on tighter,

it’s starting to slip through our gaps

hope is life, impossible, but there

Because we are there –

The ocean we fought

So hard

To cross

To reach the other

Widening into a vast expanse

Of unwanted –

Unanticipated

Opportunity

We never knew was

There.

This time we

Refuse to

Sink into

The void –

Lifeless and longing

For more.

Anticipating the end,

As we are

Dragged by a current

We cannot withstand.

Hope is the

Life we chose

When we dove –

Blindly

With eyes wide open

Into this –

Whatever this maybe –

It is born of hope -

Harnessed by the

Wind.

And sealed by

A burning flame.

Hope -

Is our arms

Striking outwards

And our legs

Butterflying -

Into the wings

We will use

To fly.

Bound.

And.

Free.

At will.

At last

The heartbreak and longing for a path out of the darkness is so crushingly beautiful!! Truly breath taking, congrats on Top Story, btw!!

Congratulations on top story πŸŽ‰ The imagery of water and how hope flows through us, slipping but still thereβ€”it’s so relatable. And that ending? Turning struggle into wings to fly? That’s just... chef's kiss. Great work!

Congrats on the Top Story! I loved this piece. The way the lines got smaller and smaller was a nice touch. Beautiful writing!

There is so much hope sprinkled within this piece while yearning for a better life. This line was simple yet to me, so powerful, it says so much about love and vulnerability. β€˜ our arms grow weak without others’

Your hope is inspiring. I admire how it moves/has moved. The question in my mind is one of how hope influences. A river shaping rock feels a good metaphor to me. A confluence of influence. Sorry... rambling! Congratulations 😊

We are demanding hope this time.... This was such a beautiful and optimistic poem. Got to be honest, it's kind of hard to feel that way right now. I guess we will see. As you say, we just need a little bit of hope.... Wishing you both all the best.

powerfully imagery and a powerful image. I think that one little splash of a flower feels so emotionally weighted. It makes me think not only of hope, but how hope can put as at odds with the crowd or push us into a strange sort of isolation. Great poem and great photograph.
