The Night I Fell for a Gypsy Boy

We made passionate love under the stars

The Night I Fell for a Gypsy Boy

It was firelight and fiddle,

dust in the dark,

boots on old gravel

and a spark in my heart

He spun like he owned the wind,

grinned like he knew my name,

with a coat too thin for the cold

and eyes that wouldn’t stay tame

His hair was long and careless,

his laugh came deep and rough,

he asked me to dance with a nod,

like that was enough

No silver tongue,

no promises made,

just the wild on his breath

and the moon on parade

We danced till my heels gave out,

till the world felt new and wide,

he kissed me like a thief

and I didn’t hide

I should’ve walked away,

I knew his kind,

but something in me loosened

when he took my hand in his

Not a word about tomorrow,

not a whisper of goodbye,

just a stolen night

beneath a travelling sky

And though he is gone,

I see his face

in my baby daughter’s face and eyes
