The Last Goodbye

A Nonet to Frederic Because I Couldn’t Stop Him from Leaving

By Lacy Loar-GruenlerPublished about a year ago 1 min read
The author and Frederic, who died at 46, in Le Boissiere-Ecole, France

My days are your hand-me-downs, threadbare

Love growing thinner as you fade

like old cloth. Why did you leave?

But you cannot answer.

The universe tore

Us apart when

It took you

And you

Died.

Oh no! And Frederick so handsome and all. I was today thinking of why some wonderful people go so early, leaving echoes of themselves stamped upon time. There must be an angelic spot opened for them to fill, leaving behind those who sadly miss them so. Somewhere nearby where you can only sense, he watches over you and wishes you smile, for he is happy.

💧"My days are your hand-me-downs, threadbare/Love growing thinner as you fade/like old cloth." Hello, My Wonderful Lacy! Sorrow and joy were immediate in my heart the moment I read your moving narrative poem. I thought you said that writing poetry was not one of your strengths. My memory is apparently wrong. I loved this nonet! Every time I read your work, I grow, as does my admiration for your gifts. Stay well, Dearest Lacy! 💙✍️💙

So sad! I'm sorry, loss is hard and always a tiny piece left to bring the tears again.

Poignantly penned. I feel a little melancholy after this one. Lump in throat.

Oh, Lacy! This is absolutely stunning and stirred me to tears. So much heartache and grief in such a short poem. Written so beautifully from start to finish. I’m terribly sorry for your loss.
