The Joy of Motherhood

A poem for Mother’s Day

By A.L. Van LeinbockPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Me and my baby girl

You wake up early and need to be fed

Make our nipples raw and take up all the bed

You fight sleep because you want to play some more

Take away the freedom we used to have before

You cover us in pee, snot, and puke

Mushy food, sticky stuff, dirt and even poop

You demand all of our attention

Taking our energy and filling us with tension

You were held in our wombs at our body’s expense

And as we carried you our minds lost all their sense

Because here we are doing these things with joy in our hearts

Knowing if given the chance we’d do it all again

Because though it can be hard in some parts

You’re our little girl or boy, our tiny baby friend

Knowing how much joy you bring us despite the trials we endure

Helps us understand God’s joy in us and helps us love Him more

Seeing you so helpless moves us somewhere special within

Showing us our weaknesses by being our spiritual twin

So sure, go ahead and honor us for being your mom

But don’t forget it was having you that filled our hearts with song

And yeah give us flowers because sometimes we get torn apart

But remember that though flowers die, you’ll always be in our heart

There’s nothing better in this world than having the privilege

Of watching you grow up; watching you really live

You’re the best present we could have ever asked for

And we are proud of you for being you to our very core
