The Heaving of the Breathless

The weight of the mother holding a hand they must let go

By Kimberly WashingtonPublished about a month ago 1 min read

The love that wouldn’t leave my lips leaves me breathless

I see the weight of the unspoken as you walk away

I’d never breathe again were it not for the heaving of the breathless

The fury it courses; this moment is senseless

A world of wonder now reduced to decay

The love that wouldn’t leave my lips leaves me breathless

I stood by for nights that felt so endless

Bearing pain for jest you left on display

I’d never breathe again were it not for the heaving of the breathless

Desperation remains in every caress

Abrupted childhood rainbows scattered grey

The love that wouldn’t leave my lips leaves me breathless

I see what used to be; you stand with no witness

At war on the same side, body present, mind astray

I’d never breathe again were it not for the heaving of the breathless

I sustained what I release with hope for stillness

Stay near in heart, my darling, your own drum you must obey

The love that wouldn’t leave my lips leaves me breathless

I’d never breathe again were it not for the heaving of the breathless
