The First Time I Captained Our Boat
A poem about the water ahead of me as I captained our family pontoon boat on the Great Sacandaga Lake for the first time.

The wings of white caps surround me,
blowing kisses of froth and foam to the wind,
the bubbling specks sparkling in the beam of
setting Sun over the surrounding peaks.
As the pontoons cut through the glassy surface
and the thunder of the motor carries for miles,
our vessel is trailed by a shadowy wake,
robbed of the glittery brilliance of the Sun-kissed front.
But the wake ripples outward
leaving behind a trail
of gentle rolling mounds that eventually
catch the last of the glowing red rays.
As the Sun disappears,
our music swells and my spirits soar,
and I watch with quiet satisfaction
as the last of the disturbed water meets the shore.
