I remember rocking my son as a newborn. I was feeding him a bottle and humming to him softly. I began to wonder what infants dream about. I recalled the saying "The Field of Dreams," which stood out to me. Taking that to heart, I began what I originally called "Ovandos Lullaby," after the name of my son. Slowly the short story came to life. I have always thought that babies' dreams must be so surreal. This story I hold close to my heart. I Imagined my baby boy drifting off to sleep, fully trusting in his parents to take care of him and be there for him. Who watches over him while he sleeps? As I glanced around his room, I saw a little lion and elephant poking their heads out of a Noah's Ark figurine that was on his shelf. I couldn't help but smile as I wove the both of them in the story as his travel companions and protectors in the night.

After reading and singing to him so many times, I can't help but picture this story whenever I see him sleep. Cuddled in his crib with his little eyes closed. Whether it's from the rocking chair or from the camera, we have mounted above his crib. It sometimes feels like the elephant and lion really are his protectors while mommy and daddy aren't watching. Hearing his tiny breaths, his chest rising and falling, a small tender smile begins to form as he dreams a dream. A dream of bliss, a dream of happiness, a dream where the elephant and lion play, down in The Field of Dreams.

While asleep for the night, it is his journey in the field of dreams. A place of wonder and a place of comfort, knowing that when he wakes up, his mom and dad will be right there waiting for him. The story came to life and will be one that we will share with all our other kids as they grow.

Without further delay,

The Field of Dreams

Close your eyes, my baby, and drift off to sleep

Close your eyes, my darling, and dream.

The field of dreams is never complete

Till tonight you join in and dream.

The field of dreams is oh, so sweet.

Where you can dream up an elephant or dream of your mom.

Close your eyes, my little one; the boat awaits

A boat of fun, bound for the field of dreams

As your eyes get heavy and close all the way

The boat will rock and gently sway

Your journey will take you away for the night,

In the care of your mom holding you so tight.

to the field of dreams Where the elephants and lions play

They'll keep you safe as you dream away

Down in the field of dreams

The lion's mane is soft and sweet.

Good for a snuggle and a tasty treat.

The elephant's trunk makes an excellent swing.

With a soft, gentle push and giggles, you'll sing

He'll coddle and care for you through the night

He is so gentle he is quite the sight.

Your journey of fun will take you near and far

Soaring up high, higher to the stars

Down in the depths with all the fish

The journey is yours; just make a wish

Down in the field of dreams.

Don't fret yourself for when morning comes

You'll be returned to the arms of your mom

A gentle little smile and a soft kiss on the face

She'll scoop you up with a loving embrace

Run and play, my sweet little one

Your dream has ended, but the days just begun

The elephant and the lion will miss you a lot

With every dream that comes to an end

But when you close your eyes tonight

On the boat bound for the field of dreams

The elephant will jump

And the lion will bounce

When you dream and come to play
