The Darkness Inside

A Shadow Beneath the Smile

My life is full, my life is good.

My family, my loved ones, everything is as it should.

The sun shines, the air is vibrant.

Inside I just wish my head would go silent.

Unbidden thoughts invade my sanctuary

And tear down my life leaving me weary

The darkness rampages leaving me torn and bruised

To the point where I feel exposed and used.

In time the darkness lifts with a promise of return

My sanctuary once bright now burns.

I rebuild, repair, and renew the fight

My refuge gets a few more cracks, a little less bright

Day by day, I feel my defenses fail

Darkness is on the horizon, a rampaging wail.

A smile I continue to wear walking tall and proud

To give off an air, to not let people see the shroud

I laugh, I love, I love while trying to hide.

The darkness that lurks the darkness inside
