Watching you dance with your friends

As I gain the courage to approach you rather than stare from afar

3 shots of Tequila later and I still can’t make my feet move in your direction

My best friends laugh as I fall in love with someone I have never held a conversation with

Your hair slicked into a ponytail

Your dress flows behind you with every step you take on the dance floor

Your smile is intoxicating

I almost wished they served that at the bar

Maybe then I would gain the courage to say "hi"

I can see your friends pointing at me

They giggle between their sentences

I wonder if they are telling you whether I am a creep or an admirer

I don’t really know what the difference would be

4 more shots of Tequila

And I could finally say we made eye contact

It was subtle

You looked tired of your friends spewing bullshit

So you turned suddenly

Not giving me enough time to turn towards my best friend and make it seem like they were all I could look at

I was caught

Caught in your gaze

I could feel the blush start to take a turn on my cheeks

Slowly glazing over my ears and neck

Did you just smile at me?

No

Maybe a friend walked behind me

Maybe you saw someone better

Someone who didn’t waste their Friday nights staring at the prettiest woman they had ever seen

Maybe you just wanted to get a rise out of my panicked state

2 more shots of Tequila and my body starts to float in your direction

Luckily if I make a fool out of myself

I can say I was only going to order another round of alcohol

Since you gladly sat next to the bar

I once thought the term "star crossed lovers" were made for the gullible

That "love at first sight" was idiotic

However,

When I sat two seats over

I heard you take a deep breath and giggle

You got up from your seat and cornered me at the edge of the bar

I expected you to tell me I was a creep

Not that you thought I looked prettier up close

Or that my smile is worth seeing

Or that my perfume was not something you could live without

I remember the day like it was yesterday

The day I got to meet the love of my life

The day where I got your phone number

The day that started everything

The day I was glad that the distance of the room

Couldn’t keep us apart

Even if I needed a little liquid courage

love poems
