The De(s)cent

Pearl

By C. Rommial ButlerPublished 11 months ago 1 min read
William Henry Margetson: The sea hath its pearls

Stripped away

To the last kernel

Of self,

Nonchalantly tossed

Into the foaming sea,

A grain of sand lost

In salt-soaked ecstasy,

Eaten up,

Shuttered in the clam

Of fate,

Aggravated and lost

In a solitary revery,

A pearl was formed

Beneath the foaming sea.

<>

A pearl was formed,

A pearl was formed,

A pearl was formed

By the pressure and pain

Of the timeless, raging sea,

A single impertinent grain

Remaining decent

Against the descent

Into the frothing waves

That overtake the graves

Of a silent eternity

Beneath the timeless, raging sea.

<>

A pearl was formed.

Fascinating how a pearl gets formed. Now I need to go read up on that. Love the idea and poetry.

An appreciation for the pearl but a metaphor for beauty in the face of turmoil?

Loved the repetition of "a pearl was formed" Everything of value takes time and effort! This really captures a striking image of such a process! Beautiful poem, Rommi!

That was fabulous. U especially love "Remaining decent Against the descent." Well done.

  • But why can't I become a pearl without going through anything? Lol. Loved your poem!

Sometimes you have to irritate to see the beautiful results. A great reminder that true love comes from grit and determination

This is stunning—lyrical, haunting, and full of depth (literally and figuratively). The rhythm carries the weight of transformation, and the imagery of the sea shaping something precious from pain is just chef’s kiss. It’s the kind of piece that lingers, like an echo in deep water.

  • Nice work.

Extraordinary writing, Rommi. In your sure hands, the journey from microscopic irritant to a wondrous gem is mythic. Awe compressed through time till it becomes timeless.
