When does politeness become a problem?

Not politeness in the sense of kindness

But politeness in the sense of unkindness

Sitting back and saying nothing at all

Sitting back and doing nothing at all

Sitting back, just sitting back

"Politeness, n: The most acceptable hypocrisy." Ambrose Bierce

"As an immigrant, I truly believed when I was coming to this country that people had the tools necessary to life to live a life that is prosperous, that is just and free. So, every single day, I am shocked with the hypocrisy of this country. That we are the wealthiest nation in the world. But we cannot figure out how to house our homeless people." Ilhan Omar

"Hypocrisy is the ultimate power move. It is a way of demonstrating that one plays by a different set of rules from the ones adhered to by common people." Michael Shellenberger

-hypocrisy reigns supreme in the halls of power, where the corrupt ply their lies and crooked agendas over and spoon-feed the gullible and indifferent, the "offended" and inflamed, the true blue and the pure, while there are those who still offer "the genuine milk of kindness to the thirsty and needy"

Yet there are those who resist, not with silence, but creative action.

This is art, we are art, the art of the counterattack.

"The power of art is the power of truth." - Julian Beck

This is such a significant and topical piece. Hypocrisy like this is rampant, and has gone so far beyond even that.

  • In our country, in our church, in our world, hypocrisy reigns loudly. But love & grace continue with their quiet work, offering hope in the simplest & most creative ways.

Very clever structure Paul, you are so good at coming up with these novel approaches.

This is a fantastic rant, Paul. As someone who teaches political communication, I think we are far beyond hypocrisy now. Modern politicians cannot be shamed. They are constantly flipping reality, dragging us through their lies into a dead-end post-truth society. We need to resist and get the control back from the mad fascist oligarchs who got to power. Never thought I would be writing this about USA.

Gosh there were so many clever lines in this. Love the bit about spoon feeding the gullible and the indifferent. Hypocrisy is one of the worst things - I think it's hard to fight against. Well done Paul.

Yes, plenty of politeness and hypocrisy in a whole lot of powerful places. So sad, but true. Liked the way you structured the alternating lines with the slow addition of the message. Very clever!

You have stated a lot in this article, and we all need to learn this lesson and not be hypocrites. For some this would be a hard lesson to learn. Good job.

‘I’ve seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied, I’m on my way….’ Song lyrics by Yes. The hypocrisy of the day has gotten so extreme it’s impossible to satirize. Loved your poem, Paul!

I’ve been saying this for some time now. So many shocked people seeing injustice but refusing to act. I have now fallen into that category, when I was young I spoke up, went to meetings, been part o& plans and more importantly faced the people creating the wrongs ( in my opinion) Now I read the news, say not my country, town or family, shake my head and hope someone does something. Do I have it in me for another fight? Perhaps.

Ahh superficial kindness, hypocrisy, and everything else. Yes.

Well, tell us what you really think, Sir. Great poem, you hit today's hypocrisy right on the head, Paul. Well done <3
