Time stands still for no man — or woman,
No matter how much we wish, dream, beg or plead,
The clock ticks silently on the dawning of the eve,
And suddenly, five minutes have passed, it’s time to leave.
**
One day we look in the mirror and question the grey that’s taking hold,
The fine lines full of lies,
The deepening wrinkles that tell our story,
And the dimming eyes dulled by the tears we cried.
**
But the mind feels that it was only yesterday that we’d come of age,
The heart feels as strongly as it did when it first broke,
Every crack and bleed full of precious memories,
The gifts, the love, the pain, the words we spoke.
**
Then the day arrives and we feel cast aside by society,
Past our prime,
Our use a burden to those we’ll leave behind,
As the sands in that hourglass counts down the time.
**
So stop!
Take a look once more in that looking glass,
For I promise you don’t look a day passed fast cars and burnouts,
Taste of a fine red wine with just a sliver of class.
**
There’s no substitute for hard earned wisdom,
Calloused skin and cracked heels,
Bones that groan and click and clack,
That only the years can make us feel.
**
Many leave before the golden years dawn,
Check out with a lung full of regret,
So, if your viewing the silver head of hair staring back at you,
There’s more of life for you to live yet!
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
