Terrible Exhilaration

-my interpretation of the last page of The Giver in Jonas’ perspective

gripping my brain with unsteady thoughts, the blast of the wet air hits us hard, in our chest like a pounding war drum

Soft energy in a gentle stream of music clouds us like a giant ocean of light as I breathe out through the crackling darkness

My Gabriel, my beautiful brother, humbled beyond as an innocent baby, I have to hold on for him, our future—-his past like a swelling sun in a wounded, split in half river, I watch it happen again catching up

I can’t believe the way this makes me feel. It’s a taste that fits perfectly with all the best flavors. Home cooked perfection.

The memory of the entire human experience races down my throat like raw honey as we sled down the hill, the feeling of being able to really

Feel after being deadlocked to nothing … is like a Terrible Exhilaration, a moment of weakness before you stand up again.

Gratitude
