sweetness

tastes like a memory

One cup sugar.

Two cups flour.

Revive the moment,

with handwritten notes:

‘A hint of vanilla’

adds nostalgia

which blooms to life

as it bathes in cocoa.

It’s in the air.

Eggs, milk, butter?

Chocolate perfume or despair?

Things only we know

drift through the olfactory.

Breathe in the aroma.

Taste the memory.

Savour the moment

while you’re next to me.

Watch it meld.

A pinch of salt

stings the wounds

from words no longer heard;

from hands no longer held.

It bubbles and clots

but there’s sweetness there,

somewhere

amongst the flavours

and forget-me-nots.

Whisk it out and stir together.

Hold on,

then watch it rise

as the colours dance;

my precious tether.

‘Cool for an hour’

Remember forever.
