Intoxicated

Whispers calling to me in the dark

fingerprints appearing on my door

Building me a fire, all I need's a little spark

and the courage when my feet first hit the floor

The rain keeps on fallin', it's tappin' on the glass

holdin' secrets I don't know, just out of reach

Beggin' me to find the answers, all I've gotta do is ask

hidden somewhere in the words I never speak

***

And he's hiding in the floorboards, he's always circling my mind

it's a double-edged sword, it's got me thinkin' all the time

Wonderin' who's really in charge, am I the puppet or the string

He is a criminal at large, and he's bent on framin' me

****

He's got me hangin' on the words he never says

like a vision out there, smokin' in the rain

Piercing blue eyes and a smile that last for days

now I'm trying on that jacket that you wear if you're insane

He's got me sayin' baby doll and pretty please

in those skin tight denim blue faded levis

I've never seen a man before, made for those jeans

but if he wanted, without asking, I'd be beggin on my knees

***

And he's hiding in the floorboards, he's always circling my mind

it's a double-edged sword, it's got me thinkin' all the time

Wonderin' who's really in charge, am I the puppet or the string

He is a criminal at large, and he's bent on framin' me

***

Lord, please tell me that you've seen the warnin' signs

the signal from the smoke filling this room

I've tried to walk away it seems, at least a million times

but I guess I'm intoxicated by the fumes

***

And he's hiding in the floorboards, he's always circling my mind

it's a double-edged sword, it's got me thinkin' all the time

Wonderin' who's really in charge, am I the puppet or the string

He is a criminal at large, and he's bent on framin' me

Loved this line: "now I'm trying on that jacket that you wear if you're insane" This poem definitely read like a country song or eighties rock ballad. Great job!

What a great country song filled with love and angst and something else. Good job.

'Wonderin' who's really in charge, am I the puppet or the string' What a great line.... This expresses so many of us and sums up relationships and mixed emotions.
