Lessons learned

Slices of reality,

sharp as broken glass.

Dreading what you say

and what will come to pass.

Hiding everything I feel

in fear of your rejection.

Trying to become

your idea of perfection.

Dodging truths that I can’t face,

brutal words that burn.

Helpless to change

the lessons that I’ve learned.

Willing to tell you

exactly what you want to hear,

just to keep the peace

and avoid the words I fear.

Leaving all my self worth

laying outside your door.

I won’t bring it in

if it means you’ll love me more.
