Sisters

A Poem

By Sara WilsonPublished 4 months ago 2 min read

We were never really sisters

You don't know what that word means

We were born in the same blood line

But all we share are genes

-

The definition of sisterhood

can be easily confused

It doesn't run away when things are hard

but it doesn't stay to be abused

-

Sisterhood means sticking beside you

It's making sure that you're okay

It's not just saying what you wanna hear

and always giving you your way

-

Sisterhood is cheering each other on

It's saying, "I'm proud of how much you've grown."

It's saying, "I'm here to listen to you."

"You don't have to be alone."

-

It's giving you the solid advice

You may not want to hear

It's holding tight to each other's hands

while you conquer every fear

-

It's sometimes not speaking to each other

but always standing up

It's sharing some of what you have

to give her an overflowing cup

-

It sticks around on the hard days

When you're crying on the ground

It's saying, "Even though you made me mad,

I'll always want you around."

-

Sisterhood is happy tears

when you accomplish something great

Sisterhood should always be there

It shouldn't always make you wait

-

Both of you have robbed me

for the contents in my cup

You've only wanted me around

So that I can lift you up

-

You take and take and take

Until there's nothing left to give

You'd cry on Facebook if I died

but you're absent while I live

-

So, tell me, Sisters, does that sound

like sisterhood to you?

You've built your entire lives on lies...

Is there anything that's true?

-

So, tell the world that I'm the bad guy

Tell them I'm the one to blame

Go hide behind your bible quotes

So the world can't see your shame

-

I won't pretend that I am God

I don't sit high enough to judge

But show me in the bible

where it says to hold onto your grudge

-

Sisterhood cannot be broken

Even if it sometimes bends

but we were never really sisters

We were never even friends.

reminds me of "someone" I know. how I wish those words weren't true but they were and still are. Thank you for sharing this. I know there are others out there who feel the same way. Awesome how you managed to put those feelings into a poem. GREAT writing.

That last line really stung, "We were never even friends." You never really think of siblings as friends, sometimes because they are much more than that, sometimes because they were never even that at all. I'm sorry for the inspiration that I am sure went into this, but I hope that you gained some catharsis by writing it.
