Sinking Lull

Mariko

By Melissa IngoldsbyPublished 3 years ago 1 min read
Mariko, from Elfen Lied anime

sinking lull,

No lullabies

No arms to hold me

Hundreds of arms outstretched from me

I am frowning

Drowning

No one to hold me

I’m sinking in that drowned out lullaby

My mother whispered

I’m sinking in a lull

Of slow moving time

It’s like I am time itself and everything moves around me

I no longer believe I can have someone hold me without

Getting stuck in that sand trap

Of my condition

My ghost arms, like ghost mother

Cut through steel

Steel my heart

Sinking lull,

Ghost lullaby

My father closes out my lull

And I am just me,

Mariko, lonely and free.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder for a time, but leaves us with a destitute heart when too often repeated. Lovely poem. As usual!

This poem beautifully captures the feeling of loneliness and isolation, with poignant imagery and a haunting lullaby motif.
