She Wears a Cloak of Strength

Hiding the horrors that are written within her battered heart

She’s scorched with the wisdom of the past,

Destroyed and broken from its hurtful shards,

Slumbering through her destructive dreams,

Locked and hidden within the heart she carefully guards.

🖤

Her feet are forever cold and frost bitten,

And still she wanders the landscape of her war,

Shallow rumours beat her between her brows,

Causing her to triple lock her door.

🖤

I hear the whistling of her pain from the brazen echo,

And feel my heart break for her misbegotten grief,

I cry a river of tears that flood her nightmares,

Washing away her wishes like a darkened thief.

🖤

I ask her how it is she continues to survive her world,

And she responds with a smile as she speaks,

“I ride the crests of the pain with joy and abandonment,

Holding on tight to the precious glimpses of hope as it peaks.”

🖤

I stare at her in awe as she stands tall and proud in front of me,

Her smile a little lopsided upon her fractured face,

The strength this woman wears as a cloak of security,

Wrapping her in beauty, pure delight and grace.

🖤

I hear the tinkle of her tears as she cries herself to sleep,

And feel the effort of holding onto sanity this day,

Knowing she’ll wander the dirty halls of her personal prison,

Facing each demon that destroyed her in play.

🖤

Sunshine spotlights the glorious face she shows the world,

A halo shimmering upon her nape in its golden glory,

I look deeply into the depths of her brown umber eyes,

And see the real truth in her hideous story.

🖤

The fact that she can still smile tells a tall tale,

She should be clothed in bitterness and betrayal,

Instead she shines through the kindness of her broken heart,

To the picture perfect vision she weaves in portrayal.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

The last stanza was so sad especially because it's soooo true! So many of us actually do that!

  • I wonder what she thinks or focuses upon when she pastes the smile across her face.
