Seeing in Color

A poem about domestic abuse

By Emma ThompsonPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

It came without a warning

I could not even see

That while choosing to love you

I was losing me.

With every bruise and mark

Every vulgar word you used

I still could not see

That I was being abused.

I repeatedly blamed myself

Even though it was not right

Somehow in a world full of color

I could only see in black and white.

They say color speaks to our souls

In a million different ways

I began to suffocate

When I was only seeing shades.

So I left you and it is harder

But I know this too shall pass

Because today for the first time in years

I saw the bright green grass.
