Searching Under the Wrong Rocks

Choosing foolishly based on the wrong outcomes

My heart has learned a few home truths over the last few days,

Words are a powerful falsity and a damning draw back,

Reeling us in on false pretences, easy to believe their underlying meanings,

Our own interpretation placating the truth these words lack.

❤️‍🔥

I’ve discovered that the fire, the passion I’ve been searching for,

Is a void of stupidity, a nemesis of the endurance of pain,

The flames from that fire that burned me so brightly,

Blackened my heart and turned me insane.

❤️‍🔥

The heat of such a love sizzled my skin,

Searing the walls of my lungs in every breath,

Melted my heart and the chains that bound it,

And then left in a blood bath of love’s very death.

❤️‍🔥

I was searching for the wickedness of immaturity,

In certain hearts that are toxic with wanton desire,

A searing kiss that reeled me in deeper,

Setting my world, my body, my soul on fire.

❤️‍🔥

Those short minutes of time sprinkled through my lifetime,

Love that was so worthy of my tears,

Stripping me to the bones, peeling back the skin,

Exposing my dreams, my wishes, my fears.

❤️‍🔥

But sadly, this kind of passion, heat and fire,

As epic as the deep emotions run, intense and unsustainable,

They burn brightly for the shortest period of time,

Then crash and burn the death of the unexplainable.

❤️‍🔥

I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not the heat of the flames I need,

As I’m quite capable of setting my own world on fire,

In fact my world consistently bursts into flames and burns uncontrollably,

And my love is destroyed when the burning flames expire.

❤️‍🔥

I’ve been searching under the wrong rocks,

Choosing the undesirable outcomes,

Instead of the chances that face me innocently,

Warding my heart from the very possibility it becomes.

❤️‍🔥

Rather than searching for the one that will set my skin sizzling,

Searing my heart in a ball of passionate fire,

I recognise that I really need one who is more a slow burn,

A friend, a supporter, a heart healer I can admire.

❤️‍🔥

A partner who’ll take the time to heal my searing breath,

To shore up the cracks of my bleeding heart,

Soothing the burn in my lungs as my chest expands,

And allow me to breathe once more, as old pains slowly depart.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I loved this stanza so much that I read it a few times to take it all in. Awesome poem my friend!

  • Best friends do make the best lovers. At least that's what I've been told.
