Don't you think we are born knowing how to disappearโ€”

how to smile even as the hourglass bleeds.

*

Every promise is a stitched-together thing;

every fading morning, a memory forgetting itself.

*

The stars we love are dead before we see them.

The gods we pray to are echoes of our own need.

The hands that raise us tremble, too.

*

No one tells you:

the heart can love itself into ruin,

the dream can drown you sweeter than sea.

Even the strongest voices fade,

whispered out by a wind no one sees.

*

But still, we carve names into trees

as if bark could remember.

Still, we chase the fleeting ends of days

as if the sun could warm us forever.

*

It is terrifying- those serpents that coil beneath.

how beauty and break are a bundle pack,

how the truth and lie are siblings, both able to bare teeth

And hand in hand they are able to switch and swap back.

*

And enjoying time is like pouring fine wine into river

Every drop diluted irreversibly, you'll never get it back

You can only hope it was time well spend as it fades into a sliver

in a water so unforgiving and endless, where memories shimmer

before vanishing like mist in morning, Time growing dimmer-.

Was it worth it?

*

And still-

we love,

we fall,

we build golden towers out of dust.

Before we knock them down in rage

*

Because a scary truth

is not the fall-

itโ€™s how we willingly burn to fly,

when we could safely walk under blue sky.

Whew, this was sharp and beautiful! Lifeโ€™s basically a messy mixtape of heartbreak and hope... Incredibly done! โœจ

  • I usually have one or two favourite lines in a poem but this one, omggggg, I feel every line is my favourite! They're all soooo deep and hard hitting!

This was astounding, I read this second to the other one about repressed words and while they are both impeccably written, this is perhaps my favourite of the two? I often muse on this same thing, about life and how if you look too closely at life and what you do with it, it can just feel like a constant chase or from one place to another place. I love how you dig into that and I was especially taken by this wonderful section "And enjoying time is like pouring fine wine into river Every drop diluted irreversibly, you'll never get it back You can only hope it was time well spend as it fades into a sliver in a water so unforgiving and endless, where memories shimmer before vanishing like mist in morning, Time growing dimmer-. Was it worth it?" That is one of the best sections of poetry I've read on Vocal in a few weeks. And I love how you tie it up at the end. With that very thought-provoking finish. Well done, Lou. I am going to add this to my saved pieces so I can come back to it.

Wow, this really hits deep. The way you talk about how we disappear, love, and let things slip away... itโ€™s all so relatable. The idea that weโ€™re constantly chasing something, even though we know itโ€™ll fade, feels both heartbreaking and beautiful. I love the part about carving names into trees and how we still build even though we know it might all crumble. Itโ€™s like we're always caught between wanting to hold onto something and knowing we have to let go. And that line about willingly burning to flyโ€”such a powerful truth about how we push ourselves, even when we donโ€™t need to. So much to reflect on here.
