Santa Claus – The Poem
Something I just dreamed up

It was Christmas Eve
My wife lay asleep beside me
The children were dreaming
Of what Santa would bring
I was tossing and turning
When a loud clamor started below
I slid out of bed and reached for
The bat I kept under the bed
Slowly I went down the stairs
And what a sight I did see
A fat, man in a red suit
Was stuck in my fireplace chimney
Now I have been a believer
Ever since I was small
So there was no doubt
As to who he was at all
I grabbed onto the black booted feet
And pulled as hard as I could
Out popped a jolly fat man
Twinkling eyes and white beard
We tumbled to the ground
And he laughed ho, ho, ho
Alas Santa had twisted his ankle
And I helped him to my recliner
Then dashed upstairs to dress
And wake up my wife
I left her to tend to Santa
And dashed outside
There on my roof
Were eight reindeer
Braying and pawing
A huge sleigh with a large sack of presents
I took my ladder from the garage
And clambered on up
I don’t know if the reindeer
Understood the dilemma
But as soon as I sat down
They flew off the roof
And up into the night sky
I believe I am the only mortal man
Who has made it around the world
In one whole night
Dawn was breaking over my hometown
As we landed back on my roof
Tiredly I clambered back down the ladder
Wearily put it in the garage
And went into my house
Santa was drinking some hot coffee
And ready for a flight home
Santa popped back up my chimney
And I dashed out to see
Him waving good-bye
And with a Merry Christmas
The sleigh disappeared into the bright sky
I dragged myself up the stairs
And as I was laying my head on my pillow
My children dashed in
Shouting “Santa’s been here!”
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
