Red South, Blue North

somewhere around the 49th

You say you see only light.

So why is your vision so heartlessly black?

You tell me your ears hear only truth.

Yet, you are deaf to the cries of the needy.

You laugh at the less fortunate

and step over the misplaced,

as you demand your "poor me" moment in the sun.

Regardless of your self-flagellation,

you’re not the victim here.

The only one beating you down is you.

If you think you’re on the right side of history,

you need a new book. Because the truth is

you see with eyes tainted with hatred and cruelty.

You hear with ears deafened by the sound of your own voice,

and the bleated screams from the flock of the righteous.

You feel with a heart obsessed with your own ego.

You think with a mind poisoned by

your own warped version of who are the now worthy

who are the now disposable,

and who never mattered in the first place.

Sometimes I wonder if you can think at all.

You’ve already proven how little you care.

I love the strength in this poem. What's happening is nothing short of horrific and you capture that so well.

"you see with eyes tainted with hatred and cruelty."...ain't that the truth :( If only there was a prescription for that. They wouldn't wear the glasses, of course.

You are much more generous of spirit than I, what is left to such a caged animal but to spoil things out of gleeful hatred. Unfortunately, our government and everything it stood for has been sold to the highest bidder, one that can afford to collect other governments.

  • I'm not sure if you're talking about the orange tyrant or a narcissist in general, but people like this never learn. Loved your poem!

  • A message he has long steeled himself against hearing or even entertaining. Should he ever have the opportunity to read it, I'm guessing he'll simply throw it away without a single thought. And yet, the grace of God abides, even for him, though I can't help but think that it will be one painful purging or refining fire through which he must pass to receive it. (And then I find myself wondering, will mine be any less harrowing?)

Absolutely spot on. So true. Love the line about his vision being so heartlessly black. Excellent. What an absolute mess we are in.

It is so sad. Everything I hear on the news feels so punitive. Great, well expressed poem.Cathy.

As per usual your indictment is on point and to the point and beautifully expressed. The hatred masquerading as government policy is already taking lives and yet appears hungry for more.

Public discourse is now synonymous with the script of an internet troll and empathy seems unable to penetrate computer screens. A well versed indictment of the anger class

    Indeed.

Too many contemporary minds and hearts are as cold and closed as this potent poem implies. May your verse reach, and revivify, some of them!

So wrong and evil, I wish people could see behind the lies earlier. Maybe they have a change in heart.
