Potion
For Ellie Hoovs' Unofficial Wonderland Poetry Prompts Challenge 16
Dust me off and give me air,
Remove the cork and sniff what's there.
That's the aroma of magic bottled
Of herbs dry-racked and mushrooms throttled.
A mixture concocted to tempt you
An elixir designed to ensnare you...
Now if you were to take a sip
Of what I offer you
That's right, just bring me to your lips
And drink me, brave and true.
I promise much in what I hold
And your reward for being bold
Is what you desire, your need, your wish -
Just whisper it and I will dish
It up for you, like a pig on a plate:
Whatever it is, don't hesitate.
That's it...and now it's coming out...
Your essence, deep and dark...
As you reach inside and draw it out
Like a larvae unremarked.
Be careful in what you wish for today
For you might just find it comes your way
And with desire, conflict trails
With its spear and its sword and its cat-o-nine tails.

Dark and whimsical all at once! Great rhyme and flow! And quite a good warning to heed too!
The rhyme scheme on this one was so seamless Rachel!! Nicely done!!
Like a good stiff drink it is the sting in the tail you have to watch out for. 💗
Love this sting in the tail at the end - you should definitely be careful what you wish for. This series of poems is amazing Rachel.
Great job! This feels perfectly of a piece with something like Alice in Wonderland
This is, dare I say, magical. And yeah, be careful what you wish for. Truly beautiful work, Rachel.
Love this! Love that you wove the classic warning of magic's price into this with so many gorgeous lines. It feels ancient and mythical.
A well-wrought and apt symbol of the effects of many alchemical elixirs and witch's brews! In the last lines, though, I think you're giving us the real straight dope: it's our desire that ultimately binds us moreso than the means we use to pursue it.
The potion you brew in these pages is truly magical, Rachel! Always a pleasure to imbibe!
Ahhh. You had me at the title. And were wondering what you were going to use to rhyme with bottled. Not many choices, haha. The only other thing I can think of at the moment is coddled. Nice entry! Magic is always a fun subject.
Potion makes for great poems. 😁 This is lovely.
Be careful what you wish for.... I once prayed, "Dear God, I need a break!" Two weeks later I broke my leg stepping on second base. I sense your poem is highly evocative & I believe at another time I might be able to comment more appropriately, but right now it's 4:20 a.m. & I'm completely wrung out. I'll leave it up on my computer for tomorrow.
As soon as there was that plea for me to bring you my lips, I was ensnared. Caught so I could be whipped at the end. Awesome imagery, Rachel. ⚡💙⚡
