Postcards

a poem

By Kay HusnickPublished about a year ago 1 min read

I browse souvenir shop aisles, spinning displays

counting my choices as I sift through postcards

one for my mom, a photo I can picture on the fridge

some for my best friends, a quick old-fashioned "thinking of you" to make up for shorter conversations, ignored texts as I travel

one for my dad; he'll hang it in the office, brag for a while that his daughter is out there doing well

some to keep, some as backups for mistakes

all intentional, a part of my love language I hope to make an expectation

a small declaration of the ways some people are always with me

I love postcards and I especially enjoyed those spinning displays. For a short while in the 1980s I collected postcards. It was a short-lived hobby of mine. But I still love them to this day and I get so thrilled when I get the occasional one in the mail.
