Pomegranate Lips
Greek/Roman God Hades/Pluto | Patron of the Underworld, wealth, and also known as "The Unseen"
Greek/Roman Goddess Demeter/Ceres | Patron of harvest and agriculture
Lore of Greek/Roman Goddess Persephone/Proserpina | Patron of Spring and Reincarnation
Sweet little petal,
Caged in a glass house.
Your mother loved you so.
She knew of the Tyranny of the Gods.
The Tyrant that sat on a throne.
She only wanted to protect you dear.
From the predator who violated her so.
"Sweet little petal don’t you cry,
Mother understands.
You are caged in a glass house.
Like a bird that can’t fly.
Like a broken bird that longed to soar the skies.
Mother can only protect you for so long.
Your powers are starting to grow.
So sweet little petal,
Don’t wander too far!
The predators are always nearby."
Mother only feared the eyes of the sky,
And have forgotten the Shadows that lurked by.
Sweet little petal was taken by the God of the Dead
Into the Underworld where she was fed
With Pomegranates that sweetened her lips
And crowned Queen of the Dead she became.
A bigger glass cage there she went,
But with better freedom, she longed to get.
"Sweet little petal I told you to stay!
This betrayal will sure have everyone pay!
Winter, I shall bring forth on Earth
And crops shall grow no more!"
The Underworld felt Mother’s wrath
And understood her maternal love.
Unlike the Tyrant in the skies who had no heart,
The Underworld had more soul and love.
Sweet little petal became the Spring and the Reborn.
Reunited with her mother once more.
This time She was no longer in a cage
And fear She felt no more.

Hi, I'm CyCy!
Thank you for reading. I truly appreciate it!
This poem came to me along with my most recent one, Helen of Beauty, last night while I was trying to sleep. You know how it goes. The muses only sing whenever you don't want them to. LOL
Anyway, maybe one day, I will have enough to compile into a book.
What is the Goddess Persephone Lore?
There are many variations of the Goddess Persephone lore, and how she became the Queen of the Underworld.
Some say that she had been lured and abducted by the God of the Dead and the Underworld, Hades, and in some accounts, it is said that she willingly joined Hades to escape her mother, the Goddess of Harvest and Agriculture, Demeter.
You see, the Olympian Gods and Goddesses have a messy and toxic family dynamic.
Persephone was born from Zeus r*ping his sister, Demeter, and since Hera was also known for punishing Zeus' victims and affairs, Demeter became fearful that Her daughter would fall victim to the Gods' indiscretion. Thus, she became protective of Persephone.
Yet, no matter which variation you will read, each one is consistent with representing the deep connection between Demeter and Persephone. The lore represents the deep maternal love and how children will inevitably grow up.
The Abduction of Persephone
As Persephone grew up to be a beautiful and powerful Goddess, she began attracting attention from the other Gods - and one of them was the God of the Underworld, Hades. Hesiod's Theogony and the Homeric Hymns described Persephone's abduction by Hades in great detail.
According to their literature, Hades fell in love with Persephone, but since Demeter would never permit Her to venture down to the Underworld, He asked for Zeus' permission to abduct the Goddess.
While Persephone was gathering flowers with Goddess Artemis and Goddess Pallas, the daughter of Triton, Hades burst through a cleft in the earth and took Persephone away.
Upon discovering Persephone's disappearance, Demeter searched Earth with Hecate's torches and forbade the land to produce again until Her daughter was found. And in Her great despair, Her neglect of Earth caused famine.
The All-seeing God, Helios, the Sun, eventually told Demeter what occurred, and since Zeus became pressed with the cries of the hungry people and other Deities, he ordered Hades to return Persephone.
Hades complied, only after He had tricked the Goddess to eat food from the Underworld, the pomegranate. Since she had tasted the food of the Underworld, Persephone was now obliged to return to the Underworld during the winter months.
Other variations of the myth suggest that Persephone fell in love with Hades and willingly ate the pomegranate. Some say that this variation depicts Her act of rebellion toward Her mother so she may finally achieve independence.
In conclusion, getting involved with the Deities can cause your grievance, or you may receive exceptional blessings. In this lore, however, we are not too sure whether it was a happy ending or not.
Either way, proceed with caution.
P.S. Don't worry. I will always try to remind you. 🍀
