Please Let Me Die

Sober

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

Dear Lord,

Please let me die sober.

When my time comes

Don’t let me stumble up to you

With piss-soaked trousers

And spit running down my chin

And bleary eyes

Please let me die sober

I want to come to you with my head held high

With gratitude, love and humbleness

Sweet Jesus,

Help me

Do this for the people

I love and who love me

They do not deserve this

I don’t want to hurt them anymore

But the smell coming from this bottle

Is almost too much to resist

The clinking of the ice against the glass

Sounds like music to my drunkard soul

Sweet Jesus,

Give me strength

Please let me die sober

I don’t want to be the fool who

Dies behind the wheel, taking other souls with him

I don’t want to drown in a puddle of vomit on the bathroom floor

I don’t want to say the cruel things I have said

I want to leave with honor

My family does not deserve this

Your glory does not deserve this

Lord,

Please let me die sober
